Stereolithography Materials: There are several manufacturers of stereolithography materials as well as a myriad of material types. However, the majority of materials for general SLA fall into the catagory of either simulating polypropylene, ABS, or Polyethylene. We find the properties between the polyethylene and the polypropylene simulated material are not very far apart. Therefore the most commonly used stock materials are DSM Somos® 9120 and DSM Somos® 11120 DSM Somos® 9120 resin replicates polypropylene's tensile strength and elongation at yield. This resin creates a robust, functional, and accurate part while offering superior chemical resistance. It also offers a good balance of properties between rigidity and functionality. This material is especially useful in applications where durability and robustness are critical requirements such as automotive components, electronic housings, medical products, large panels, and snap-fit parts. The color is similar to natural polypropylene with a slight yellow hue. Unfinished it is about as translucent as natural general purpose polypropylene. This material takes well to coloring, painting, as well as other forms of finishing. DSM Somos® 9120 Data Sheet (PDF) DSM Somos® 11120 also known as WaterShedTM is a strong, rigid resin. Many of the physical properties of WaterShedTM match those of extrusion grade Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) and transparent grade Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), two common plastics used in manufacturing. This makes the material very suitable for numerous automotive, electronic, medical, and consumer applications. To generalize, it is not flexible like the 9120 materal. In thin cross sections it is extremely clear, while in thicker sections it has a slight greenish hue similar to plate glass. It can be polished to an optically clear surface finish. DSM Somos® 11120 Data Sheet (PDF) The quality of the part is very much influenced by the skill of the engineer programming and operating the SLA machine. Please be sure to discuss with our engineers the attributes needed for the part you are building. |
